Professor, Medicine
I was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, into a family that instilled in me the values of hard work, faith, education, and respect for others. In 1980 I began my training in biomedical research at the University of Puerto Rico-San Juan, which was followed by doctoral and postdoctoral training at the University of California-Davis and the Scripps Research Institute-San Diego, respectively. In 1997 I joined the faculty of LLU School of Medicine. I have been married to my wife Geli, a Peruvian social worker, for over 35 years and have a son (Assistant Professor of Pathology at LLU and Loma Linda VA Medical Center) and a daughter (Physical Therapist in Oceanside CA). As a Tenured Professor of Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, and Medicine, I am highly committed to the following goals:
1) pursuing scholarship excellence in the fields of cancer, health disparities, and autoimmunity research; 2) maintaining an extramurally funded biomedical research program; 3) further the mission and objectives of the LLU Center for Health Disparities and Molecular Medicine; 4) training a diverse scientific workforce; 5) mentoring young investigators; 6) teaching graduate and medical ÁÔÆæÖØ¿Ús current and emerging concepts/technologies in my areas of expertise; 7) engaging in service at LLU, the community, and national/international academic and government scientific organizations; and 8) supporting and representing the mission and values of LLU at the workplace, the community, and the multiple outside academic and professional venues where I am called to serve.
